Liposuction of the face and neck is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits along the jawline, face, and neck. By removing excess fat, the lower face may appear slimmer, and the jawline will have improved definition and contour. In the neck, liposuction will address concerns about a double chin, jowls, and overall fullness of the neck region.
The procedure itself involves 1-3 small incisions of 5 mm or less in the submental area and in front of the ear if liposuction of the lower face is being performed. Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used to ensure comfort during the procedure. In addition, tumescent anesthesia (a form of local anesthesia) may be used as well.
Most surgeons have multiple small liposuction cannulas specifically designed for the face and neck. A small cannula is then inserted through one of the small incisions and excess subcutaneous fat is suctioned out, The surgeon carefully sculpts the area to achieve the desired contour. The small incisions are then closed with a single dissolvable suture.
Patients may experience some swelling or bruising following the surgery but there is generally minimal discomfort. A compression garment is often placed around the face and neck to minimize swelling. The garment is often worn in the evenings and patients can usually return to work in 3-5 days. Final results may take several weeks to months before the skin has time to contract and all the swelling completely resolves. Candidates for the procedure include patients in general good health, stable weight, and minimal excess or loose skin in the neck.
