Medical Turf Wars: Plastic Surgeons Clash With Other Doctors About Who Can Perform Liposuction And Tummy Tucks
By Amy Nordrum @amynordrum a.nordrum@ibtimes.com
A state-by-state battle is underway within the medical profession over who has the right to perform breast implants and facelifts. Plastic surgeons shudder when they see other surgeons offer cosmetic procedures to patients -- services that plastic surgeons say only they are qualified to perform.

‘Mommy Makeover’ Combines Procedures for Postpartum Body Contouring
More women are expressing interest in plastic surgery to restore a more youthful figure after having children. An update on combined procedures for postpartum body contouring -- addressing the abdomen, breasts, and other problem areas -- is presented in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
I greatly value my membership in the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. The association with like minded professionals and the excellent training courses put on by our members will keep me coming back for years. Thank you CACS.
I have been a member of the CACS for 5 years. During this time I have developed valuable relationships with highly skilled surgeons and cosmetic physicians that have greatly enhanced my practice. I have been serving on the board, have made close friends throughout the organization, and have learned a great deal from my colleageus, the workshops and the meetings. This is a unique organization that provides something no other organization can provide; that is, the opportunity to exchange information and advance the specialty of cosmetic surgery with colleagues who come from diverse training backgrounds and offer unique perspectives on many facets of our specialty! You cannot find this in your individual subspecialty. We have a bright future in cosmetic surgery and I look forward to many years of education and camaraderie with the CACS!
I joined the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery over 10 years ago. I enjoy meeting colleagues and friends at the annual meeting and workshops. The CACS provides educational opportunities as well as exposure to latest technologies and techniques in the cosmetic surgery arena. The multidisciplinary approach and exposure to experts from different fields is always an advantage. In addition, the CACS is the only organization that represents the interest of cosmetic surgeons in the state of California in Sacramento and in front of the medical board. I encourage you to join this wonderful organization and enjoy the camaraderie.
I joined the CACS for education and camaraderie. I have met wonderful colleagues and appreciate learning from my mentors. I now belong because we are at a crossroads. Avaricious third parties are trying to limit our ability to practice our specialty of Cosmetic Surgery through legislation. The CACS is our only political advocate to protect our rights as Cosmetic Surgeons. Thank you CACS!
I neither live in California, nor have initial boarding in a surgical specialty, yet I’ve found a “home” with the CACS. It is an honor to belong to an organization that is all about educating members of all backgrounds in true Webster fashion, peer-to-peer and friend-to-friend.
The CACS is the Premier California Organization representing & educating Cosmetic Surgeons from many specialties! CACS membership is important to both Cosmetic Physicians & patients who benefit from a doctor who emphasizes cosmetic procedures in their practice. The CACS is a powerful force for teaching and has many American and International experts eager to instruct our members on the best cosmetic techniques available today. Join the CACS now because we are your political & instructional society representing Cosmetic Surgery worldwide!
I have found no better place to belong than the CACS. The mentors and experienced surgeons I have encountered and trained with, have gone over and above to make sure I got it. I was met with great hospitality, a desire to teach and advance my practice. The mentorship, training, friendship and sense of belonging to a reputable organization are tremendous.
As a Diplomate of ABCS and as the current president of the Texas Cosmetic Surgery Society, I know how important it is to belong and participate in an organization that truly represents the unique needs and values of cosmetic surgeons at the State level. I have always benefitted from the tremendous learning opportunities and friendships that I have developed through the CACS.
BOARD CERTIFICATION

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the only certifying board exam devoted to examining a surgeon’s skill in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. It is an independent subspecialty board that examines and certifies physicians in general, facial and dermatological cosmetic surgery.

- Perform a minimum of 300 individual cosmetic surgery procedures of the face, breast and body (recommended minimum requirement for plastic surgery residencies is only 55 cases)

- Perform and document an additional minimum set of cosmetic procedures following completion of 1-year fellowship
- Pass a comprehensive, rigorous 2-day oral and written exam covering all aspects of cosmetic surgery
