Scar Revision

In some situations, a scar revision is necessary following breast lift or breast reduction procedures. Patients may heal with scars that are too thick or too dark. For scars that are too dark (“hyperpigmented”) there are lightening creams that can be very effective in lightening the color of the scars. If scars are too thick, that may improve over time, with conservative measures such as massaging the scars or using scar cream. However, sometimes additional measures are needed, such as injecting the scars with steroids, or microneedling or laser resurfacing to improve the thickness of the scars. When scars do not respond to these measures, or they are extremely raised or thickened (known as “keloid scars”), then a surgical scar revision may be the best option. In these situations, the thickened scars are excised and the incisions are closed with sutures. Often scars can heal better after a surgical scar revision. The procedure can be done with local anesthesia or with general anesthesia depending on the patient’s preference and surgeon’s recommendations.
