Preparing for a Cosmetic Surgery Consult

Before your consultation:

  1. Research your procedure ahead of time; click here for information. (link will go to Procedure Learning Center)
  2. Prepare questions you have for the surgeon; click here for checklist (link will go to ABCS checklist)
  3. Assemble your medical history including medical problems that are heredity. Ask your surgeon if they can provide their paperwork before the appointment. This will make things easier.

Arriving at the surgeon’s office:

  • Is the office clean?
  • Is the staff courteous and friendly?
  • Is the atmosphere warm and inviting?
  • If the office cannot provide the necessary paperwork ahead of the appointment, fill out all paperwork accurately and provide a detailed list of medication and supplements you are taking, including herbs, teas and vitamins.

Meeting with the surgeon:

  • Do you feel at ease with the surgeon?
  • Does he/she listen to your concerns and make comments?
  • Is there an understanding of your expectations?
  • Does he/she clearly state your options?
  • Are you a good candidate for the interested procedure? If not, what is needed to become a candidate?
  • How many times have they performed the procedure?
  • What are the benefits?
  • What are the risks?
  • What board certification(s) does he/she have?
  • Where will the surgery take place?
  • Will it be at an accredited surgical facility?
  • Does he/she have hospital privileges? If so, where?
  • What are the qualifications of the person performing the anesthesia?
  • What type of anesthesia is required for the procedure?
  • What are the credentials of your surgical staff?
  • What are the emergency protocols if there is a complication?
  • Ask to view before and after photos of patients with similar physical qualities.
  • Ask about financial options (if applicable)

After the consultation:

  • Consult with multiple doctors
